When I made this portrait collage my goal was to create a piece that not only conveys what I look like, but something that also conveys the things that define me. In my first layer which is my original selfie I hold a solemn yet blank face. This represents what I appear to others but not necessarily who I really am. The second layer is a picture of my dog Allie who died last summer. She represents something loss, and something that has defined the way I think about members of our family. My third layer is a picture of my kittens. They are a new part of our family and they display the youth and willingness of my family to move forward. My fourth layer is a picture of my DECA State Champion trophy. DECA is a business competition that I am really passionate about and enjoy doing. It somewhat defines what I want to be in the future. My fifth layer is a picture of my previous pair of soccer cleats. They represent the type of player that I used to be, and how I have changed my game to better fit the teams I play on. My final layer is a picture of my dog Augie. He represents a constant in my life, a part of my family that never changes. These photos allow people to gain a higher level of understanding about who I am, and they add a greater meaning to my portrait. A meaning that not only captures what I look like, but also who I am.
Compare and Contrast
I think my double exposure looks much better than my original selfie. The images in the double exposure are much more seamlessly combined, where the selfie the images look a lot more pasted on and unnatural. The quality of the selfie itself is also a lot better than the quality of the original selfie. I framed my face a lot better in the second and used a better background with better lighting. My double exposure also describes me a lot better than my selfie, a single place evokes more emotion and understanding than a series of images that a viewer might not necessarily understand.
